So, one would think that since my accident my Woodstock quest would have been put on hold. I was hospitalized for a month and practically immobile until the last couple of weeks. However, through a simple twist of fate the quest was able to continue. When I saw Hot Tuna in December, I met a fellow collector named, Gary. He also was on a quest to obtain the signatures of Woodstock performers on his Woodstock and Woodstock II lp's. We spoke about collecting and he was unsure of how to obtain the autograph of performers such as Melanie. I told him that it I was seeing Melanie in a couple of days. Gary gave me his albums and I was able to obtain Melanie's signature for him.
Gary felt indebted and told me that he was going to see Johnny Winter at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT in January and would try to obtain an autograph for me. He was unsuccessful, but he vowed to see Mr. Winter perform again at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT on February 8, 2008. This time he was successful.
But wait, there's more. Gary had contacted Joe Cocker's people and asked if he would autograph some things for him. He included my poster and Mr. Cocker signed and inscribed my poster with "Rock On!" .
On April 11, 2008, Jefferson Starship was playing with Tom Constanten, formerly of the Grateful Dead, at the Ridgefield Playhouse in Ridgefield, CT. Gary was able to obtain Mr. Constanten's autograph for me; however, Paul Kantner denied us.
On April 25, 2008, Gary went to the Quick Center in Fairfield, CT to see Steve Katz, the founding guitarist of Blood, Sweat, and Tears. Again, we were successful and Mr. Katz signed my poster.
Gary asked who we could mail the items to to get a quick turnaround, I suggested Dr. Jerry Hyman. He used to be the trombonist for Blood, Sweat, and Tears - now, he is a chiropractor in Rye, NH. Which Dr. Hyman was good enough to sign and mail back to me.
So, without moving a muscle, I was able to augment my poster with 5 additional autographs. Now that I am mobile (somewhat), I am going to see Richie Havens on May 30. Even though he signed my poster, he did so in pencil, so, I wish to get it resigned as his signature is rubbing a bit.
This brings my poster to a total of 18 signatures:
Jefferson Airplane: Marty Balin, Jack Casady, Jorma Kaukonen, & Grace Slick Blood, Sweat, and Tears: Jerry Hyman, Steve Katz, & Fred Lipsius Grateful Dead: Tom Constanten Gypsy Sun and Rainbows (Jimi Hendrix): Billy Cox Mountain: Leslie West Arlo Guthrie John Sebastian Country Joe McDonald Richie Havens Joe Cocker Johnny Winter Melanie and poster artist, Arnold Skolnick
